Zakat Policy
Last updated: March 3, 2025
This Zakat Policy describes how Rising Beyond Borders collects, manages, and distributes zakat in alignment with Islamic guidance and local regulations.
Purpose and commitment
We respect the sacred trust of zakat and distribute it in a manner consistent with Shariah principles and community needs.
Zakat funds are tracked separately from general donations to ensure proper use and reporting.
Eligible recipients
- Priority is given to the Qur'anic categories: the poor (fuqara), the needy (masakin), zakat administrators, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, those in bondage, individuals in debt, travelers in need, and those striving in a permissible cause.
- We focus on widows, orphans, and vulnerable families who meet these criteria, providing assistance through cash, essentials, and livelihood support.
Collection and segregation
- Zakat can be designated at the time of giving through our donation tools or by contacting our team.
- We maintain separate accounting for zakat receipts and disbursements to preserve donor intent.
- Where required, we verify eligibility before disbursing zakat funds.
Calculation and nisab
We encourage donors to calculate zakat based on current nisab values and personal circumstances. Our zakat calculator provides guidance but is not legal advice; please consult your trusted scholar or advisor for specific rulings.
Distribution approach
- Aim to distribute zakat within the same lunar year it is received, prioritizing urgent needs such as food, shelter, debt relief, and essential healthcare.
- Provide support in forms that preserve dignity, including cash assistance, food packs, education and livelihood stipends, and other eligible categories.
- When collaborating with partners, we require documentation that zakat is used only for eligible recipients and purposes.
Administrative costs
We strive not to use zakat for overhead. Administrative needs are covered by general donations whenever possible. If a limited portion is needed for permitted collection and distribution costs, we do so transparently and within accepted guidance.
Restricted designations
If you designate zakat for a specific program or location, we honor that intent when feasible. If a designation becomes impractical or fully funded, we may redirect to a similar eligible need and will seek to inform you when possible.
Surplus or shortfall
Any surplus zakat is carried forward for eligible recipients. If designated funds are insufficient for a promised initiative, we may supplement with unrestricted donations while maintaining Shariah compliance for zakat portions.
Governance and oversight
- Internal reviews ensure zakat is allocated to eligible categories with required documentation.
- We may consult qualified scholars for guidance on complex allocations.
- Periodic reporting on zakat use is provided to donors and stakeholders, subject to privacy and safety considerations.
Refunds and corrections
If a zakat payment was made in error, unauthorized, or misdesignated, please contact us within 14 days. We will review and, where appropriate, correct or refund the amount consistent with regulatory and Shariah guidelines.
